October 26 tech news roundup: Google Messages gets spam blocking, Apple is working on a Game Store, eM Client acquires Postbox

Google Messages app to protect users from SMS scams Google is testing a new anti-scam system for the Messages app. Users of the beta version of the app are protected against spams and scams that may contain fake job offers, pending delivery, or to harvest personal data. When you receive such a text, the Messages app will automatically move the suspicious message to a spam folder, or warns you about them. This is possible due to an enhanced anti-scam system that uses on-device machine learning technology to combat spam. Google has also added a feature that will blur inappropriate messages, such as those that may contain nudity or other sensitive content, before the user can view them. The feature scans the content locally on the device, without accessing the images or breaking the encryption of RCS messages. The sensitive content feature will be activated automatically for users who are under 18, and will be optional for adults. The feature is compatible with devices running on Android 9 or above, and meets the 2GB RAM requirement. Opera browser to continue supporting classic extensions Google Chrome is discontinuing support for Manifest V2 extensions, which has caused add-ons like uBlock Origin to be disabled. This has caused an outrage amongst users, who have even migrated to other browsers.  Not all Chromium browsers are not following Chrome’s pattern. Brave browser had previously stated they would continue supporting older extensions. Vivaldi has also confirmed it will support Manifest V2 until mid-2025. Now, Opera has committed to the same. Opera browser will support Manifest V2 extensions, including uBlock Origin, which is directly available from its own extension store. The company has not outlined its plans for supporting classic extensions, but says it will get in touch with developers to determine the best and safest way forward. This could be an excellent option for users who wish to use older add-ons, and for developers who want to use APIs that are not available in V3. The only other browser that has promised support for Manifest V2 and V3 extensions is Mozilla Firefox. Meta AI’s Chat Memory will remember your WhatsApp chats Meta is working on a new AI tool to provide better conversations on WhatsApp. The tool which is called Chat Memory is designed to remember your chats to offer a personalized experience with relevant responses. This is essentially training the AI with your data, but is only accessible to the user. Facebook’s parent company is testing the feature in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android. Chat Memory will allow users to ask questions about past events and important dates, and get the data quickly. It kind of sounds similar to Windows Recall, except WhatsApp is not monitoring your screen all the time. But, this has already raised some concerns about the privacy of user data. WhatsApp’s Chat Memory will allow you to opt out of the feature. Syncthing for Android app to be discontinued The popular file synchronization app, Syncthing for Android, is being discontinued. Simon Frei, who developed and maintained the open source app, announced that the mobile version of the app had not seen any major development, and it was becoming hard to maintain the app. The developer also blamed the Google Play Store for rejecting the app from accessing the device’s storage. Numerous appeals to the company had resulted in poor responses, which in turn made the developer lose motivation for maintaining the app. Syncthing for Windows, macOS and Linux are unaffected by the change. Android users may want to switch to an alternative app by the name of Syncthing Fork, it has more features than the original app. Postbox email app acquired by eM Client Czech Republic based company, eM Client, has announced the acquisition of the Postbox email app. The desktop email program, which was based on Mozilla Thunderbird, was available for Windows and Mac. However, it is no longer being sold, and users are being advised to switch to eM Client. Postbox has confirmed that its app will no longer be developed, and that it will be supported until the end of the year. The news has taken Postbox users by surprise, and they have two options. They will need to switch to eM Client, and pay for the subscription, which is temporarily available for a discounted price. Or, they can continue using Postbox for as long as it works. eM Client has a free version for Windows and macOS that allows users to use it with two personal email accounts. The premium version, which costs $50 has more features. The iOS and Android versions of eM Client are freeware. Apple could launch a Game Store Apple is said to be working on a Game Store, which would exclusively serve as a platform for downloading and discovering games. The App Store, which is available for iOS, iPadOS and macOS, already allows users to download and play games on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac. The upcoming gaming hub will reportedly offer a unique experience that combines the App Store and Game Center. The Game Store will allow users to discover recommendations and personalized suggestions via the Play Now Tab. It will also offer social features like challenges, rankings, achievements of your friends and other players. The app may also integrate FaceTime and iMessage features for real-time communication between gamers. Apple’s new Game Store will also display apps from Apple Arcade, to highlight the games that are offered by the subscription service. Vivaldi’s new tab page gets a Dashboard with widgets Vivaldi browser has been updated with a refreshing New Tab Page design. It now has a feature called Dashboard, that lets users customize the space with various widgets. There are several widgets to choose from including Date and time, Sticky notes, Speed Dial, Calendar agenda, Latest emails, Bookmarks, Tasks, Tip of the day, Feeds, Top sites, Privacy statistics and Webpage. The best part is that the old New Tab page has not been removed, so the Dashboard is optional.

Brave Brave for Mac is the brainchild of Brendan Eich (co-founder of the Mozilla Project). It’s a ultra secure, open source web browser that is based upon Chromium/Blink engine, and it aims to block website trackers and remove intrusive internet ads. In doing so, it will replace them with ads that are sold by Eich’s company. The browser also aims to improve your online privacy by sharing less data with ad customers. It does this by targeting web ads via an analysis of users’ (anonymous) browsing history. Brave for Mac opts to retain 15% of ad revenue for itself, pay content publishers 55%, ad partners 15% and, (this is the good bit) give 15% to the browser’s users’. You, the user, can then donate to bloggers and or other web content providers through a micropayment system.Brave for Mac has been designed specifically to block ads and trackers, which slow your browsing speed down, spend your bandwidth, and try to access your private data. Download Google Chrome 106.0.5249.103 for Mac

Google’s game changing browser Chrome for Mac combines sophisticated technology with a simple UI, to create a faster, safer and easier browsing experience. Google’s rapid and continuous development cycle ensures Chrome for Mac continues to close in on Safari’s dominant position in the Mac browser market. Speed We thought Firefox was good but Chrome not only beats it for speed, it also takes less strain on Mac CPU. Which means not only will your browsing be quicker, but so too will other applications you’re running at the same time. Google Chrome launches extremely quickly, runs applications at speed thanks to a powerful JavaScript engine and loads pages rapidly using the WebKit open source rendering engine. Add to this quicker search and navigation options from the simplified UI and you have a browser that is damn hard to beat on speed. Clean, simple UI While this was a revolutionary area for PC users, Mac users were already used to slimline looking browsers thanks to Safari. We think Chrome improved on this further though – the simple UI hasn’t changed much since the beta launch in 2008. Google focused on trimming down unnecessary toolbar space to maximise browsing real estate. The browser is made up of 3 rows of tools, the top layer horizontally stacks automatically adjusting tabs, next to a simple new tabs icon and the standard minimize, expand & close windows controls. The middle row includes 3 navigation controls (Back, Forward & Stop/Refresh), a URL box which also allows direct Google web searching and a star bookmarking icon. Extensions and browser settings icons line up to the right of the URL box. The third row is made up of bookmark folders and installed apps. Easily overlooked now, this clean UI was a breath of fresh air compared to the overcrowded toolbars of popular browsers pre-2008. Privacy Another hugely popular feature, Incognito mode allows you to browse privately by disabling history recording, reducing traceable breadcrumbs and removing tracking cookies on shutdown. Chrome’s settings also allow you to customize regular browsing privacy preferences. Security Chrome’s Sandboxing prevents malware automatically installing on your Mac or affecting other browser tabs. Chrome also has Safe Browsing technology built in with malware and phishing protection that warns you if you encounter a website suspected of containing malicious software/activity. Regular automatic updates ensure security features are up to date and effective. Customization A vast selection of apps, extensions, themes and settings make your browsing experience unique to you. Improve productivity, security, navigation speed, pretty much anything you can think of with apps and extensions from the Google Chrome Store. Install themes created by top artists or make your own using mychrometheme.com. Sign in with your Google Account to back up your contacts, preferences, history as well as access all your Google tools with a single login. In case you are looking for an alternative, you may want to try Avast Secure Browser. The program provider has restricted distribution of older versions of this product. Download Avast Mac Security 15.7.5 for Mac

Avast Mac Security is an extraordinarily safe and effective antivirus program as it will protect your desktop from all forms of online threats such as ransomware, viruses, and other malware. Besides protecting your Mac from ransomware, it preserves your privacy online and keeps your devices secure and functioning like new.  On macOS, Avast Premium Security adds ransomware protection and real-time notification when new devices connect to your network. This free antivirus program is compatible with most macOS devices; Avast supports 10.11 back macOS versions (El Capitan). If your Mac cannot run El Capitan, consider ProtectWorks AntiVirus, which is supported in version 10.6 and later on (Snow Leopard). For decades, Macs have had a stellar security reputation. One reason is that Apple computers are designed with robust security measures and few exploitable flaws. Another reason is that the majority of the world’s population possesses Windows computers so black-hat hackers have focused on exploiting their vulnerabilities. However, the same hackers are beginning to exploit Apple’s security protocols. Does Mac need antivirus? This free Mac antivirus contains features such as spyware and ranching prevention, it is light, strong, and built to guard in real-time from continually evolving threats. All these capabilities and other functionalities, including Wi-Fi Inspectors, are provided by Avast Free Antivirus for Mac and help safeguard your privacy and sensitive information on the internet. In previous versions of Avast Security, phishing prevention was split between a browser-independent network-level filter and a Chrome-specific browser extension. Avast Security for Mac does not have that capability but Avast works just fine without it. It’s worth noting that without the browser extension, you won’t be able to see a website’s safety rating or block trackers. Does Avast scan for malware? Avast Security offers several types of scans to improve your Mac’s security. It may not be as fast as the Webroot (which completes a full scan in 2 minutes and 30 seconds), but it will take an average of 16 to 30 minutes to complete. This would have already been a deep scan, ensuring that all corners of your device have been scanned for suspicious activity and viruses.  Avast Security cannot automatically scan removable volumes as they emerge. This will require a separate, manual scan. Known as a custom scan, this lets you schedule scans and configure certain details. This includes Time Machine backups, run scans on battery power, wake up Mac for a scheduled scan, etc.  The Wi-Fi Inspector may be launched from the main window. There is no malware detection in this scan. Rather, it gathers data on multiple devices on your network and alerts you to any security issues. The report also acts as a list of everything linked to your network, with names and types assigned to each. Source link
